We drive sustainability through our leadership commitment and strategic approach focusing on the most relevant sustainability issues for our business and stakeholders. Aligning our business to meet societal needs in consideration of health, the best use of natural resources, and a growing population, supports not only our long-term success, but also that of our partners and stakeholders.
We measure our performance in terms of environmental protection and social well-being as well as economic achievements. Our commitment starts with reducing energy, water, and waste at our own production sites and extends over our value chain. This means engaging with suppliers on the production of more sustainable raw materials, and innovating to develop processes which are more efficient, create less waste, and do not interfere with the food value chain.
Sustainability is at the heart of our business
Our biobased products from renewable raw materials provide the building blocks of the future. Our eco-friendly solutions have a lower carbon footprint and offer an alternative to fossil-oil-based chemicals in many applications, such as coatings and plastics. Our food solutions keep food products fresh and safe and help to reduce food waste. Our minerals contribute to a healthier diet and our sodium reduction solutions enable consumers to reduce salt intake.
As a responsible business, we are accountable and committed to the needs of our stakeholders, engage with them in an open dialog, and report our activities in a transparent manner.
Sustainable solutions
The consumption of traditional, fossil-oil-based plastics is enormous. Mass volume markets include shopping bags, packaging, appliances, and automotive parts. The production of plastics from renewable resources, such as PLA bioplastics, reduces this dependency on fossil fuels. One kilogram of traditional fossil-oil-based plastic requires 2 kilograms of oil, whereas one kilogram of PLA bioplastics only requires 1.6 kg of fermentable sugar. So not only less resources are needed, but with PLA bioplastics the resources are also renewable.
